Rental Car Fuel at Pickup and Return: What to Check

All guides

At El Fahd, fuel is the renter's responsibility and the car should come back at the fuel level recorded when you collected it. The current FAQ and rental terms explain this rule. Before driving away, agree the starting level with the team, confirm the correct fuel for that vehicle and ask how any difference at return would be handled. Do not assume that every rental starts with a full tank.

What should you record at pickup?

Look at the fuel gauge together with the staff member and check that the handover record describes the same reading. If the display is unfamiliar, ask the team to show you how to read it before you leave.

1. Confirm the starting fuel level and how it is written in the handover record.

2. Keep a clear photo of the gauge and the agreed record for your own reference.

3. Ask the team to identify the correct fuel type for that specific car. Do not choose it from the model name or appearance alone.

4. Confirm the return time, place and process for checking the level again.

A photograph helps you refer back to the reading. It does not replace the agreed handover record or settle a disagreement by itself. Ask for unclear or inconsistent details to be corrected before collection is complete.

Does the same-level rule mean a full tank?

Not automatically. The starting level recorded for your car is the point of comparison. If the agreed record shows half a tank, ask the team to confirm that this is the level expected on return. If it shows full, confirm how the return reading will be checked.

Do not assume that adding extra fuel creates a refund or credit. Ask about that before spending more than you need. This guide does not set a refuelling charge, promise a refund or replace the terms confirmed for your rental.

How can you plan fuel for a Cairo or Giza trip?

Start with the journeys you expect to make, including the drive back to the return point. The mileage guide helps you estimate distance and ask about the kilometre allowance. That allowance and the fuel level are separate items to check.

Avoid treating a route estimate as a fixed number of litres or a guaranteed fuel cost. The vehicle and actual journey matter. Allow time to check the gauge and arrange any necessary refuelling before your agreed return appointment.

Keep a fuel receipt if you receive one, but remember what it proves: a purchase. It does not, by itself, establish the fuel level when the car was handed back.

What if the starting reading is unclear?

Raise the question at pickup and ask the team to confirm the reference level in the record. Do not rely on a remembered conversation when the written entry says something different.

If you notice the issue after leaving, contact the team and explain what the record and your photo show. Use the current contact page for the available contact methods. Arrange a time and place to check the car if needed; do not invent your own fee or adjustment.

What should happen when you return the car?

Review the fuel reading with the team against the original record and keep the return acknowledgement. If there is a difference, ask how it was measured, which agreed term applies and how any proposed amount was calculated. No universal shortfall charge is stated here.

If the appointment changes, tell the team in advance. The rental-extension guide explains which dates and return details need fresh confirmation.

Your short fuel checklist

Before collection: starting level, correct fuel, written record and return arrangements. Before return: time to check the level, the original record and a review with the team. Ask about any unclear charge before relying on it.
